Commentary on the March 25th Board Meeting
First of all, this was an orderly and well conducted meeting. It did, however, seem to ‘go off into the
weeds’ at times when the Mayor, or Aldermen Gill or Muhlstadt attempted to disparage Alderman
Ruth for taking part in the discussions or warning of potential legal constraints to what the Mayor was
proposing. This has become a normal operating procedure and even it didn’t disrupt the meeting too
much.
For the first time since Crosby has been mayor, during this meeting, votes on proposals were changed
due to funding constraints in the budget. As a matter of fact, I heard the word ‘budget’ used more in
this meeting than in any meeting before. I wonder why budget numbers have become so important.
Might it be that the state auditor is having trouble auditing the Town’s books due to ‘willie nillie’ cross
charging of items and no one taking time to document the reallocation of funds? … Whatever the case,
it was good to see that the Board now understands what a budget is for.
As for the tree trimming work that Mr. Rhodes needs to get done; I understand that he might not know
the law when it comes to out sourcing work, but it astounds me that our Mayor, City Recorder and
three Aldermen don’t know how to obtain contractors. And what astounds me even more is that these
guys don’t know why the out sourcing requirements are required. … A hint: since the operation of
City Hall is an endeavor for the public the bidding process is designed to make sure that local
contractors get a chance (and the same chance) at doing public work. Secondarily, the bidding
process is there to make sure that stealing by public officials of public funds is kept to a minimum.
One last thing; the Mayor’s crediting of an auditor as saying ‘your political enemies are trying to make
trouble for you, etc.’ How could a man who always tell the truth about his actions and those of citizens
who have a different point of view than his; who would never use the police officers to intimidate
citizens; who gives credit where credit is due even if it goes to a person he hates; who takes
responsibility for errors in the application of budget control that cause audits to be less than clean; who
endeavors to do the right, legal thing when it comes to dealing with others and the handling of City
business; who has lowered all the speed limits in the town not to raise ticket money but to make the
roads safer for all of us; and who enjoys supporting community programs without trying to take all the
credit for that support; how could such a man have enemies? The answer is he couldn’t. Therefore,
the statement attributed to the auditor must be untrue.
Sincerely,
Sam Childs
