Your Opinions-Letter From Susan Slawson 3-11-2008
Coach Brown: CMS
Mr. Brown I would like to address your letter in the RCT letter to the Editor Wednesday
March 5th 2008.
I guess I am the follower you quoted! Never did I say children who play sports are dumb. I
said the following if you remember correctly. I feel children should learn the basics of
learning and it didn’t take much intelligence running up and down a field or court. I also said
that children need to learn it is ok to lose. From all my experience as a mother my children
played sports and no way did it help their curriculum or academic’s. But it did zap them of
their self esteem if they didn’t win and the coaches ridiculed them. This was not a learning
experience but a fast paced degrade. My main concern is that students learn, and we teach
them the basics of reading, writing, & arithmetic.
Published in the Tennessean March 7, 2008, our schools are not up to federal education law.
I would like to see that our money was spent for academics rather than sports. Now we have
high priced athletes who can’t even read a third grade reader but yet they make millions.
This is not what I want for my children or anyone else’s.
Now the alderman gave the $8000.00 you requested. Without hesitation but citizens you
must realize its not the money and it went to a good cause but we must realize that there are a
number of lawsuits pending against the City of Coopertown that have not come to surface, the
fire department dues haven’t been paid yet, now the huge amount $550,000 for lighting, Drug
fund money has disappeared, roads are as bad if not worst than they have ever been, to many
mistakes in the budget to know where we really are! Also, the huge expense of paying for
Mayor Crosby’s legal expenses. With all this above I just don’t know where the money is
coming from. With all the expense of employees at City Hall I personally don’t see how we
could afford to take care of a school funding for sports. It was also mentioned that some of
these’s types of things could be cut in the future. Now I will help with anything that would be
a learning experience for our students, band, science labs, chemistry, but not sports since we
only go to the 8th grade at our schools which are the critical years of learning. It would be
best if our students study and focus on sports for the following four years of their curriculum.
Maybe if you attended more meetings and more pillow talk with your spouse (which is city
recorder) you would know these important finances.
Thank you,
Glenda S. Slawson
