Revelations Made during the Budget Committee Meeting
(My Take on the Budget Committee Meeting held Feb. 11, 2008)
This special meeting was called at the request of Alderman Ruth who had suggested that the Budget
Committee try to identify where in the budget an $8,000 donation request from the Middle School for
football field lights would come from. She also suggested that the Board should determine how much
more both Coopertown schools might be requesting this fiscal year. During this meeting several items
came to light that I thought might be of interest to the citizens of Coopertown.
First, let me give you an observation. The meeting was conducted in a dignified and orderly manner.
Questions were raised and answered and no one was arrested or even threatened. … Mayor Crosby
held a very good business meeting.
Revelations:
First Revelation: It was apparent that our Mayor has taken some formal training on the use of a budget
as a management tool for making decisions. … at least he appeared to have learned the approach to
managing through the use of budgetary controls.
Second Revelation: During the meeting there was actual talk of other City Hall employees taking
training on how to do their jobs. This is the greatest break from the old Jack Long myth “You don’t
have to have training to do your job. All it takes is common sense.” Too long Mayor Crosby believed
Jack.
Third Revelation: Either the members of this committee are timid about asking Mayor Crosby sensitive
questions or they just over looked that the budget they were reviewing contained no reference to the
legal fees the Town paid to Tim Harvey, the money the Board is trying to spend on freeway lighting,
the money spent on the police drug dog or where the $1,000 that was returned to the landfill legal fund
came from. … and many other things that slid by and I also missed.
Forth Revelation: The meeting was held without having at the meeting the person that could answer
questions on specific charges to budget items. The meeting lasted almost two hours without the
meeting’s objectives being met, i.e.; deciding how the football lighting donation request would be
handled and identifying the other donation requests that might be coming from the other school.
Fifth Revelation: Mayor Crosby announced that he has almost booked a business to locate at the
freeway. He, also, reveled that he has two more businesses that he is trying to “talk into locating
there.” This business, according to Crosby, will have a building of more than 100,000 square feet and
will employ more than 300 people. Great Job Mayor Crosby!!!! Bring in the bacon!!
Sixth Revelation: By the end of the fiscal year Mayor Crosby will have a budgetary excess of more
than $300,000.
Seventh Revelation: The police are not driving police cars home with them anymore.
Next Budget Committee meeting will be held on March 20th at 7:00 pm.
