Crosby’s Freeway Lighting Decision -2-14-08
Yesterday it was reported in the Robertson County Times that Coopertown is willing to go it alone to
get the freeway lights that Mayor Crosby demands. This decision could turn out to be the right one for
Coopertown, but I fail to see Mayor Crosby’s logic.
First of all, Coopertown has only three gas stations at the exit that might benefit from the lights.
Pleasant View has many businesses and a large discount gas station that will benefit.
Second, Coopertown keeps a couple of police cruisers stationed on the freeway and at this exit to
ticket cars that accidentally turn the wrong way and drive into Coopertown. This should limit the
number of customers in the Coopertown businesses.
Third, going it alone puts a heavy financial burden on the Town that it does not need. There are many
‘still pending’ lawsuits that the Town could loose that could put additional, substantial financial strain on
the Town’s coffers.
Fourth, if the Coopertown Board is bound and determined to indebt the Town to the tune of a half a
million dollars (with little more than state shared funds to pay it down) why not fix our roads? The
citizens will receive a benefit 100% off of that investment. Going it alone on the lighting the citizens of
Coopertown will receive 100% of the debt and only maybe a 5% chance on capturing any substantial
new business.
Fifth, the lighting package to which the other three mayors are will to contribute would help
Coopertown businesses just as much as the Crosby design, but would cost the citizens of Coopertown
less than .2 as much ($82,500) as the Crosby edict. The Town’s budget might be able to handle that
without a huge ticket writing increase.
Sixth, the negotiating position “my way or the highway” is not the best strategy for accomplishing a goal
when working with others.
This is my take on the decision. What is yours?
